Meet the Speakers – David Mihm
David Mihm is an internationally recognized marketer who created “Local Search Ranking Factors”, where Local Search Marketing experts weigh in on the importance of over 80 criteria that influence rankings in the Google and Local search algorithm.
We’re excited to have David speaking for SEMCLE+ on Sept 10th and he was kind emough to answer some questions for us.
1. Please provide a little bit of context about your background in the search space
I’ve been involved in search since about 2004, when I worked for a couple of smaller companies in the Bay Area on their websites–from a design standpoint–which gradually evolved into SEO. In early 2006 I formally started my web-design-and-SEO business and almost all of my clients were primarily interested in traffic from customers near them–hence my attraction to Local Search. I read as much as I could about the topic & formed friendships with Mike Blumenthal, Andrew Shotland, Mary Bowling, Greg Sterling, Matt McGee and a handful of others who were writing about Local–it was an awfully small circle at the time.
Then came the 10-pack and all of a sudden this little tiny niche started to explode. It was around that time that I started my Local Search Ranking Factors survey and everything kind of grew from there–both in terms of my consulting business, and my desire to automate some of my (and other experts’) recommendations for SMBs to get started with local optimization, which led to GetListed.org.
2. Your company, GetListed.org, was acquired by Moz a little more than six months ago. Since then, how do you feel this has not only impacted your work in the local search space but also had an impact on Moz becoming a bigger player in this space?
I’ve been focused much more on product development and learning a more formal process for building a product than I’ve ever been. Even at the height of our GetListed development, it was never more than about 65-70% of my time–I always set some aside for consulting. Now I’m down to about 5% consulting time–in my off-hours–for two friends in my neighborhood; Group Insurance PDX and Perch Furniture.
Eventually I’ll be leveraging a lot of Moz’s data expertise & conducting some more extensive ranking factors studies, with the help of Dr. Matt, but for right now we’re laser-focused on the next iteration of GetListed–which we’ll be launching this fall.
3. What are your bold predictions for the evolution of local search for the next year?
I’m not sure how bold this is, but I’d guess that mobile factors will represent a significantly larger piece of the algorithm next year — things like requests for driving directions, clicks to call, page-load speed, etc.
4. What is the one Cleveland-centric activity you look most forward to doing while here?
Well, I’m a huge craft beer guy, especially since moving to Oregon–the mecca of craft brewing–in 2008. So I’d have to say sampling whatever local IPAs and Pale Ales are on offer in the CLE+
